Maud, I think it means he's back in business, so to speak. It's from the 1800s. LOL. Rob, you don't look that old, I promise. :) Anyway, welcome back to the reality of eating well!

Hah, Maud. I'm sorry. I tend toward colorful language, not sure why. It confuses some of the guys I work with, too. Sorry. But Dom is right, it just means I'm "back in business", which is of itself a way of saying I've stopped messing around and I'm getting to work on losing weight now. Not sure if that shingle thing is strictly an old US thing, but it used to be a piece of roofing slate that could inexpensively be hung on a new business (on a budget). It was done a lot in the old west here in the US, but also for a lot of folks that worked out of their homes, like Doctors.

dear dr. Weiss, thank you for your history lesson... I just got a weird thought... colorful language + the name weiss = family of... ???

Not even going to lie, Rob, I am anxiously awaiting my next opportunity to use that "hanging up the shingle" line. :-) Love it

Maybe it's a southern thang - I got it right off. Hanging up a shingle = being in business around these parts. Usually has to do with attorney's or doctor's. Or a roofer, I guess. On the OTHER hand... 'colorful' language contains profanity so I was going back looking for dirty words... LOL.

LOLOL! @Maud, good one! Maybe because my name is dull and colorless, maybe that's why I love colorful language. Hah! And too funny, @Bella... I've never heard that before. But I can do the profane if everyone wants! Hah!
