How nice you were able to help your sister in law with her new eating plan. I remember about 10 years ago my cousin was diagnosed with diabetes and drastically changed how she ate. I was so confused when she'd visit me - she had it all down to when she ate protein, how many carbs and how many times a day to have carbs, fats, etc. She wasn't overweight to start with and now is very slim. She told me the clothes just started falling off her after she switched how she ate. Once I told her about my snack of 1/3 avocado in slices topped with 2 tablespoons of chopped almonds. She told me that was "2 fats". I was just happy about the good fat and the protein in the nuts. I guess it takes a total mind change.
