My FatSecret buddies may notice that I no longer list a free Kindle diet or cooking book every day. One reason I stopped: I spent 25 minutes on the phone with Amazon customer service Sunday. The top 100 free Kindle books changes from hour to hour. It's possible to click on a book listed as free and find that it’s changed back to being for $2-3. This, despite the fact that it supposed to be a list of free books. If you have one-click ordering, you may hit the button before you realize the price has changed.

I used to think this wasn't a problem because Amazon's policy is that you can return a Kindle up to 7 days. However, it turns out that if you return books, you end up getting flagged by their system and then you have to call them on the phone in order to return the books

After 25 minutes on the phone, I was assured by the customer service representative that this wouldn't happen again. He said I wasn't returning an unreasonable amount of books. This was supposed to be cleared up after 24 to 48 hours. That didn't happen and I'm still on the list. It took another 12 minute phone call in order to return the books.

My paranoid theory is Amazon picks up extra revenue when people don't bother to go to the trouble of returning “free” Kindles they have been charged for. Bait and switch. Two dollars here, three dollars there - it all adds up. This reminds me of banks rearranging their charges so you wind up getting hit with a $35 fee because you went over your limit to buy a cup of coffee. Don’t know why I’m surprised by this kind of dishonesty. After all, there are "unlimited" cell phone plans which aren't really unlimited, etc., etc.

Amazon makes it difficult to return items when they like to claim it's easy to do so. I've learned my lesson and I now double check to make sure the book truly is free before I hit the one-click button. I know of at least one other FatSecret member stung by this policy as well, which cost them $20. I've decided that rather than expose members to this indignity and expense, I have simply stopped listing free Kindle diet and cookbooks. Thanks for your patience in reading this rant.

To be fair, Amazon did send me another Misfit Shine when UPS lost the first one they sent. The universe has a way of balancing things out. When I called up the New York Times to cancel my digital subscription, they gave me another three months for $0.99 after I paid $5 for the first 3 months. It's a promotional offer. I'll take it.

The Truth About Cast Iron Pans: 7 Myths That Need To Go Away

Eight hours of sleep with no wide-awake episodes. I drank two cups of weak coffee.

Morning plank and ten minutes first thing in the morning on the Air Walk Trainer to burn off glycogen.

Monday was a up day on the Alternate-Day Diet (eat all I want). I cooked ground up kidney beans in a chili. My original idea was to use them for protein powder, but it turns out it's not a good idea to eat uncooked kidney beans.

Cardio: one hour on the Air Walk Trainer yesterday, plus five minutes every hour to offset the effects of sitting. Steps: 767. My daily average to surpass is 746. My record on the Striiv Smart Pedometer is 1,781.

Time spent on organizing the kitchen to date: four hours, 30 minutes.

Eight hours of sleep with one wide awake episode. I drank four cups of weak coffee. Overslept by 37 minutes because I didn't set the alarm.

My sister referred me to a sport physiologist she and her husband use to help with my sarcopenia. She highly recommends him. My brother-in-law first met him when he was working at a hospital wellness center before he established his own practice. Here's his flyer:
