Does anyone here with an auto immune disease have an opinion on fat intake in the diet. Some research suggests that low fat diet is best and other it's not important. Not many studies have been done those that have been completed have been small subject size's... I have found personally that when I cut back to much on healthy fats my fatigue spells are worse. Also the recommendation on dairy was confusing some articles said dairy was a good choice others said no stay away from dairy at all costs... >< It's all very confusing to me. My doctor wasn't very helpful he said my diet was great, but then he is used to people who live on fast food. I want to optimize my debit to limit the amount of medicine I have to take for MS. I'm trying to limit it progression as much as possible. I have lost vision in my right eye and have some other stuff like energy issues, numbness, tingling, etc that I have to work around as well. I don't eat much meat and dairy is a large part of my calcium intake and protein. sigh, I wish that the information was clearer on this subject.

From what I’ve been reading, I have been trying 40% of my calories from healthy fat (low in saturated fat), 40% from protein, & 20% from carbs. I’ve been losing weight fairly steadily & find that I have more energy than I have had in a long time. I don’t limit dairy at all, because I worry about osteoporosis as well as getting enough vitamin D.

I’m actually in the hospital right now for IVIG for myositis (a rare autoimmune disease). I have a lot of your same problems plus trouble swallowing. I do not count or limit fat. My doctors have me eat high protein low carb and reduced sodium. They haven’t said anything about fat consumption. I eat lots of cooked vegetables too. It works for me. Good luck on your health issues.

Dr Terry Wahls has Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis and was in a tilt recline wheelchair. She also had brain fog. She researched everthing she could find on brain health and theorized that if she fed herself for maximum mitochondrial health, she might improve. In fact, she is walking and biking today. She runs a research program at the University of Iowa and works with the MS Society and some organization dealing with neurogenerative diseases. I forget the name. She has a TED talk. That is probably a good place to start. I heard her speak in person in 2011. I kick myself for not buying her first book for ten bucks. I can't afford it now!

I am sorry to hear about your medical troubles. The nutrition world is so confusing for all of us. Our health is at risk and the factions are just shouting louder.

I have a few autoimmune issues. When I eat a clean diet, ( lots of raw veggies) keep my protein at about 100 grams, my carbs at 100 grams and fat at about 40-50 grams, I felt so much better. Processed foods are very bad for autoimmune diseases. My joints feel so much better, the brain fog improves, and I have a lot more energy. It just makes sense. Best of luck to you!

I have psoriatic arthritis and inject methotrexate. My rheumatologist did not suggest changing my diet but I was always consuming healthy fats. No foods trigger a flair up for me.

@ Zenus, the thoughts are appreciated but I as I said before I'm not much of a meat eater for a couple of reasons... One, I grew up a mostly vegetarian and didn't really develop the enzymes necessary to digest red meat. As such it typically takes me a lot longer to digest red meat than others which causes two problems one I don't eat enough when I eat red meat causing me to lose weight in addition it causes me stomach cramps and bloating for days after eating a significant amount of raw meat approximately 4 to 6 oz of steak is enough to back me up for a day or so. Two, I just can't afford a lot of red meat to purchase enough food for a family of five on the income that I have I use a variety of sources such as the food bank of course my regular income and EBT card stretching it with legumes beans mushrooms and other fillers find sales and use other methods to stretch my budget.

@Zenus, I will look more into the elimination diet research it inquire with my doctor to see what he thinks. The short stint of research that I did after reading a couple articles did suggest that there's some concerns with weight if you're underweight or right on your weight with food aversions or issues with eating red meat with the low food map diets. So I'll have to look more into that before deciding anything. I think it really good info for food allergies though and will ask the doctor his opinion.

@Meemaw, Yes, I also worry about osteoporosis because it is mentioned as a side effect concern of almost every medicine I take so very definitely is something that I would not want to cut out of my diet if I could avoid it because of the calcium. Not to mention I prefer whole milk which includes vitamin d which helps that absorption of calcium. In addition I'm an unabashed cheese lover so this is not an unbiased opinion lol.

@cjgriffith1, I'm sorry to hear that your in the hospital right now I'm sure that's very lonely especially at night. I hated the hospital when I was there earlier this year don't get me wrong the staff will wonderful and very sweet but it also felt very much like a prison being in the stroke ward I wasn't allowed to walk freely or move around it was horrible I hope that your visit is not the same way but I expect that it probably is. I hope that your visit is short and that they're able to come to a resolution quickly and that you're able to find some sort of treatment that is effective. My current diet I ate about 90 to 120 g of protein on an average day, between 40 g and 60 g of net carbs on average, to 80 g of fat most from healthy fats, no more than 25 g of saturated fat per day, I normally stay under the recommended amount of sodium per day but I try not to worry too much about my sodium because in previous years I've come into problems with too low of sodium because of drinking too much water. Ironically under doctor recommendations to drink more water.

@Lady I will definitely have to check this out later tomorrow after some sleep it sounds like exactly the kind of thing I need to check on. And much more doable for me then the carnivore diet idea also I like the idea that some of the damage might be reversible obviously my eye will never recover but it's nice to think that some of the other issues may be reversible. My doctor thinks that my issues are progressive but currently has labeled me as remittent relaxing MS rather than progressive at this time. But I am considered second stage rather than first stage even though I've just been diagnosed. Luckily he did an emergency injunction and was able to get me a free year of medicine through Mason even though the medical card company denied my medicine and denied the appeal for the medicine so I was really very lucky to have such a great doctor and one that was so experienced to recognize that even though I had not begun anti-inflammatory medication it would be ineffective at the stage of my disease.

Thank you everyone for the support it's just really been unusual these last six months and things have changed so much. Between the blindness and the changes in activity and energy levels. I used to bike 5 miles a day and make every meal that I ate for myself and the children from scratch. It's very unusual for me to go to bed and never leave things undone I wasnt that kind of person. It disappoints me how little I can do these days I just don't like how I can't complete all the things that I want to do in my say. I don't understand why it happened from one day to the next without any reason. Sometimes I want to sit on the floor like a child and pound my fists on it and its fair. /Sigh But tomorrow is a new day and I'll try again.
