'Holy sh!t" is what I said when I stepped on the scale this morning. I knew there would be a bounce back, but 2.2 pounds? Wow! I even kept my kcal under 500 yesterday; mct coffee, stock and soup was all I had. Ugh.

Not going to let this get me down. I will continue to remind myself that during a water fast the body is breaking down fat and damaged cells. When I start to eat again the body needs to replenish and rebuild. Hopefully I won't continue to spring back tomorrow and so forth.

I had my MCT coffee this morning, water only during the day and going to have my 500 kcal dinner like planned. I was really hoping I would be able to eat normally on Wednesday, but now I'm not sure it is safe. I'm becoming afraid to eat.

perhaps sodium or on a girly note you could have a bounce back because of your cycle or ovulation.

Thanks Kathy. The sodium is a good thought. I hadn't considered that. I tried to get in more salt yesterday because I've had wicked leg/foot cramps during my water fast. (My cycle just ended and I usually drop weight at the end of my cycle.)

You are absolutely KILLING it. You have turned your mindset, commitment, and effort around 180 degrees in a few short weeks.

You have taken your knowledge of dieting, fasting, and etc. to a whole new level.

Your results, including today's, have been absolutely terrific.

You have taken yourself from (forgive me) whining about being stuck to exemplar of excellence, to cheer leader for others faster than anyone I have yet seen; self included.

You have, in a word, mastered the process.

Thank you Jimmie. That truly means a lot to me and you gave me a lot to think about during my lunch break. When I came on to FS I had just gained 16 in a few short days and I was... whining. :) I have gotten great tools and advice from the FS community. I have been surprised and encouraged by the supportive community that I wanted to be sure to pay it forward to the people I come across.

"Autophagy" process peaks at 16hrs after last meal...this is the process that cleans out and replaces damaged cells.

@MJ Autophagy = Water retention and therefore gain even though in a deficit?

I'm not so sure about divorcing the scale. Embracing the process, yes. The scale gives me a sense of control and accountability. It forces me to be honest with myself. Knuckles told me when I started (I was being whiny) that I need to be honest with myself. The scale isn't going to sugarcoat it for me. The ups and downs are just part of it, the downward trend is what I'm looking for. Would it be better to report other means of progress? Pant size, pictures, measurements, etc?

By "Divorce the Scale" I do not mean to suggest divorcing oneself from reality. I track scale weight every morning like clock work, just like you. I only am suggesting, as an ideal, divorcing oneself EMOTIONALLY from daily scale fluctuations. It's frickin difficult, especially when cutting hard and/or fasted.

@jimmiepop: If the body were a simple engine, energy in = energy out, then we would simply eat less and lose weight, however, we're more like the Starship Enterprise with multiple systems. We gladly shut down certain areas when low on resources to preserve core functionality. So while we do not burn FAT exclusively when no energy is incoming, a large portion of what we do burn is fat, and we will retain water to some degree, even in a large caloric deficit. The "Weight" is irrelevant as it's the composition that you're working on... and fasting is a great and proven way to allow the body time to clear out old damaged cells and replace with new ones...especially for anyone diabetic.

a couple of months ago I thought I would try not weighing for a month. For ME, it was a mistake. Turns out I NEED several "tools" in place to keep me focused. Since I didn't weigh, other things started to fall by the wayside. Stopped tracking religiously, didn't post my journal. Both of these things REALLY help me keep on track....

If you can go with Body Fat %, except the scales that offer this feature are wildly inaccurate and calipers for women are not that easy to use on your own. Take measurements of your calf...mid-thigh, waist at widest, waist at smallest, chest and mid-triceps. Use the scale as reference and focus on the tape measurements....

I try to make scale weight more meaningful in a couple ways. First, and simplest, is tracking a 7 day moving average. With a consistent diet, fluctuations in 7DMA should provide a much more realistic indicator of actual progress (or regress). You can also track several metrics that provide meaningful context for weight. My favorites are waist circumference and body fat %, which I check every 3 days (a little OCD). Clothing fit and pics are also useful.

@MJ Heard and Understood. My question was about the impact of autophagy on water weight. I have seen that post fast weight bump (without a carb up) enough times to know that it is a thing, curious as to the cause...
