A few posts over the last few days I found a little disturbing, and I feel like it’s time to leave a journal entry. The desperate, frantic posts I’ve seen which celebrate diet culture and poorly disguise the terror of gaining weight, or simply not losing it. Extremes. Funny thing is, it’s normal. We can all relate, we’ve all been there, and most of us never leave there.

We are a group of experts. We know how our bodies work. We’ve lost this weight before! If you are anything like me, you’ve lost it over and over again. Maybe you are pretty good and keeping it off. At least for a while.

What happens when it stops working like it did? You’ve tried everything the same. You have an equivalent doctorate in nutrition for God’s sake! Why aren’t things aren’t the same? Why? Eating less. Fasting more. Cutting carbs, adding carbs. Slowly. Very slowly, weight comes off. Not like before. You are doing everything right. Why?

I laughed a little when I first downloaded this app and saw what it recommended for me to eat each day to lose weight. I fiddled with the activity level until finally it seemed like something that would create enough of a deficit to yield some result.

If any of you are familiar with some of the ground breaking work Dr. Erin Harrop is doing, I recommend you look into it. She is studying those who have had very restrictive eating patterns and behaviors in the past, but now maintain a health weight or overweight by BMI standards. The study participants claim that really, they haven’t changed, at least much. They have many of the same disordered thoughts and patterns. Losing weight is a huge part of their lifestyle. They are self reporting extremely low amounts of calories. 500 a day, 700 a day. They must be overestimating. There is no way they eat so little yet weight AS MUCH AS THEY DO. No way. Dr. Harrop is
discovering, that yes, actually there is. The analysis of the Resting Metabolic Rate of these patients is actually so low that it would be considered starvation, and if their weight was actually lower, most met the criteria for anorexia. Years of yo-yo diets and deprivation caused major metabolism adaptions, which is believed to not be reversible. There are other BMR studies in dieters to support this also.

Super powers, right? You don’t need as much as everyone else. You are like survivor man! Except...you do. Eat and you’ll gain weight, but support vital functions. Eat what you need to lose and heart arrhythmia, delayed gastric emptying and so many other serious health risks from your everyday lifestyle. Yikes. I don’t want sudden cardiac arrest. I don’t. But i don’t know what the solution is. i do know the more you put your body through the ringer, when you age you will hurt your metabolism. Please think ahead and try and eat as much as you can and still succeed. I wish you the best of luck.

Does being thinner really make you happier? I think so. There are so many economic and socioeconomic benefits. Are these risks we are willing to take? Maybe. Just remain aware you are not invincible. Do this once, do it right and don’t ever go on this journey again. For those who have been down this road, commit to it. It will be harder the next time you travel it.
