I was sitting back today reminiscing, as I often do this time of year. I think a lot of the years I spent in the military. The life was difficult both mentally and physically at the time. This was a time before 2001. Before the nation understood how much the military did and how much they were need. It was a time we were looked down on and a time many people thought - when you weren't smart enough to do anything else, you went into the military. Well nothing could be farther from the truth and I always had a great deal of pride while wearing the uniform. There were not a of civilians that could do the things we did and withstand the undue criticism from both civilians and politicians alike. After ten years, and the birth of my daughter, who had learned to cry whenever she saw me in my field dress enough to break my heart, I decided the sacrifices were no longer worth it.

I got out of the military to pursue a civilian career. I worked three jobs at times in the next few years to provide for my family. I kept myself in good physical condition. I told myself, it would be much easier to maintain my condition that to have to get into shape so I had planned on staying in shape. Between the jobs I worked, there was little time to workout but one job was very physical so it worked for me. I kept plugging away at things and eventually I worked my way up from a production job at a chemical manufacturing factory, to a position in human resources; a very cushy not very physically demanding and very well paying job. Unfortunately, this was a mentally demanding job and I failed to maintain physical activity, leading me to become overweight and out of shape.

The ensuing years brought a see-saw battle which I am still fighting. I sometimes think "what if -" but I have to remember that "this is what it is" to change the future, we must change our present actions. I must and I will. I have to continue to fight the fat until I die.

I also have a cushy desk job. I started taking the long way around the building for things. So now that includes atleast 2 sets of stairs each time I go.
