This is a rant you might want to skip. Just sayin'.

I just got home from the Dr's. He's going to run food allergy testing. He's setting up the surgery on my right Hand. I asked him to wait until Nov. so I can get a few crucial weaving projects done. I think we finally have the issues with my bi-pap equipment provider worked out.

And then, I got a call from the woman who lives in the MIL apt. on the end of my house. She's my DIL's cousin. It's a tiny, two room place, like a small hotel suite with a kitchen. She has three VERY big dogs, one boxer and two boxer mixes. She works nights. When she got home at two in the morning and let the dogs out, one of them went after one of the two feral cats that have been hanging around and killed it. She called to let me know it was still lying there under the bushes.

The other feral cat has turned into a pet. His name is Monkey. He hung around for two years and I never fed him. Everyone knows, if you don't feed a feral cat, it goes away. Well, Monkey didn't know that. After two years of watching him get skinnier and scragglier, I gave in. I've been feeding him for the last 2 1/2 years and he will actually let me pet him now. I make sure I take the food up as soon as he is done so it won't attract other critters, including the very fat possum I've seen hanging out around the garage.

I haven't seen Monkey today. Now I'm terrified. What if her dogs go after Monkey or one of my indoor cats, who occasionally escape. I'm not sure what I would do. It's a family thing. I can't report her dogs to the animal wardens without causing a family brouhaha. My son, who is normally very sympathetic about such things and loves cats, has already said, "What do you expect? Dogs kill cats."

In my 71 years, I have never known a dog to kill a cat. Dogs usually leave cats well enough alone. I'm scared and I'm sick to my stomach and I want the dogs gone. I love dogs, but she doesn't maintain hers correctly. She ties them to a tree, right in front of her door. On a sunny day, you can see the urine crystals on the ground. On a wet day, the yard reeks. They have killed the little maple they are tied to. The mailman won't deliver the mail if they're tied out, even though he knows they can't reach the mailbox.

And, all I can picture is them taking out Monkey or Emma or Velcro.

Your concerns are valid. Pets are family. You love your cats just as much as she loves her dogs (Maybe you love your cats more, judging by what you tell us of how she cares for them) so I would suggest an amicable chat with her. Express your concerns. If she is just not getting it well, make the phone calls you need to keep your property and your pets safe.

Cats are family too and need/deserve protection. If you can't do it, who will? Sorry Johanne, its a crappy position to be in. You need to talk to her about the dogs. Dogs can and have killed cats but / BUT / not unprovoked and not out of some stupid aggression thing. Take action somehow and take care
