I have been unable to do any serious walking for exercise because of Arthritis in both hips and both knees. Replacement surgery is not an option because of my current weight. I have just received an under the desk peddler that can also be used as an arm bike. I'm going to be assembling it this weekend and start burning some serious calories.

I did join a gym (cost effective one) and use the recumbent stepper which puts less stress on my artifical hip and bum knees. At the time (March) I had 124 lbs to lose but the gym is all ages and sizes so I wasn't embarassed about how bad I looked. In a way it's a bit of a social outing as well as I've come to get to know some of the regulars. I also use the weight machines but avoid the ones that irritate my bad joints. Ultimately my hope is that my base metabolic rate will be raised.
