So tell me wise ones, how I gained a half pound overnight, with over a 400 calorie deficit yesterday.😑

I found the closer I stayed to my daily calorie goal the better my drops were. When I went low, my weight went high 🤷. Hang in there you will find what works for you.

I find that can happen to me depending on what I ate. For example sodium, big salad or my workout. I weigh myself daily so I have gotten used to knowing if it will be up. What I pay attention to though is my weekly weigh in on Friday that I am where I need to be. Knowing the triggers helps me on Thursday for Friday’s weigh in.

Redporchlady- Thanks! You make a good point; weigh daily but pay attention to the set once a week reading. You know what your triggers are. I’m not sure I’m there yet.

Sodium/water retention?

Your thyroid would slow down with calorie deficit.

A 400 calorie deficit and a half pound gain are not huge shitfs. There are so many variables that influence our daily weight. Fluctuations are normal. I know that sometimes the meal I ate a couple of days ago might influence my weight today. I think it's most important to be aware of which direction our weight is trending. I weigh myself daily, but I log my average weight for the week. So, no worries over normal fluctuations...

You know your body will adjust its energy usage to weather a big calorie deficit, so it actually has a negative effect. Think like, you're body goes into energy saving mode, and it will do that until the drought in calories is over. If you have a couple of fairly normaly calorie days not too far off your maintenance level, you will probably realise a drop after that. The trick is to cycel up once in a while, so your body does not go into serious energy conservation mode, which will stall your weight loss as it diverts attention to only necessary functions and slows regular operations. Best of luck.

Are you sure it was a 400 kcal deficit? If you're basing it on an activity tracker, know that those devices overestimate your burn. Did you eat restaurant food or an item made by someone else? You'll never know the real count, and restaurants rountinely drown their food in butter & oil, so add at least 3T to your daily count for yesterday. Next, did you weigh every single thing, every single ingredient that you ate? Finally, the food items on FS (and other sites) are not always accurate, so you may want to double-check on Google or packaging to verify calorie counts and portions. So if you went up a half pound, sure, it may be that you need to pee or that you consumed a boat-load of sodium. More likely is that yesterday's calorie count was off, either calories consumed or calories expended. Stay the course, Lis, and try to avoid restaurants to maintain control.

You didn't gain half a pound. It's important not to think of each day's weigh-in as your actual weight. If you weigh in every day for a week, and then take the average, and it's half a pound up from last week's average, then you've gained half a pound. Otherwise, you'll just read too much into water weight & food weight, which changes a lot day to day.

Water retention that happens as result of fat loss. You will lose this eventually.

Yes, so true, I do watch my daily calorie intake & try to maintain it at least by 1800 calories daily. I have been going to the nearby fitness center. I focus on strength training using free weights. I try to keep a regimen of food high in protein like fish & chicken & whole grains, fruit & and veggies, nuts & and berries. My trainer informed me that weight gain is attributed to lean muscle mass. I did gain weight according to my scale, yet I am not flabby. I focus on a strong core, so I have a defined chest abs, shoulders & legs. I have not attained my goal yet as I am trying to keep a constant regimen of strength workouts, including cardio & fast walking in the neighborhood

From day to day, your weight will fluctuate based on food and water intake and bowel movements. Don’t worry about fluctuations. Focus weight loss or gain trends over time. Good luck.

There can be many reasons, but it's only temporary. My weight can fluctuate wildly. If you're eating on plan, ignore the day-to-day and pay attention to the trend over time.

Could be sodium intake and water retention.

Starvation mode is a myth, it's just a normal fluctuation.
