UNWELCOME COMMENTS ABOUT WEIGHT

How do you all deal with it? Any good lines to shut the conversation down?

For me it's compliments, but it's still unwelcome. It drives me nuts that a man can walk in to a room at ease when he's 100 lbs. overweight, but a woman gets a barrage of comments about how she looks. Even if it's positive, the focus still shifts there and it's such bullshit. Our conversations are framed in our appearance, and as soon as you respond, you're relating to someone on that level.

I think my new solution is just to pretend I didn't hear it. Not respond to it, say something else, and keep going.

Here's the **real** kicker: the people in my life who've made the most comments about my body are completely delusional about their own.

Just give one or two word answers. For example: You look awesome! "Thank you"...Have you lost weight? "Yes"...How did you do it? "Eating less" or "Exercising more"...if you don't go into detail they will get the hint and move on to some other topic. In reality some people ask because they are truly looking for that "magic potion" that will transform their lives as it looks to them you've done. When they realize there's no magic only hard work they usually lose interest fast. And if I am being 'real' with you, I have to admit to feeling a little bummed when no one seems to notice the changes I've made. I want to be healthy. I want to look healthy. I want others to see me as healthy...I just don't want my weight to be the entire topic of conversations.

If someone complements you, say "thank you" and move on. To me, compliments are a good thing and motivate me to keep going. If you don't like it, it's still good to be polite and then change the subject. Most people are complimenting you out of kindness. You are right, there is a double standard.

It's not an out and out compliment. It's not, "You look good." It's detailing which parts specifically are smaller, then vs. now and a creepy feeling that they've been sort of tracking me. Yes, we notice each other's bodies. But it's being deconstructed. I'm a person not a bunch of parts.

Oh well that's not a good thing. No one should make you feel uncomfortable like that. If have tried talking to them about it and they don't listen, you might just have to ignore them and change the subject.

I agree with Susie. If you have mentioned to the person/persons that there comments are not needed or welcomed & that you would prefer that they keep them to themselves & they continue,& you can't or don't feel YOU should have to be the one to change the subject, you can just look at them in the eye next time they approach you,say nothing, shake your head in disbelief that they did it again after you told them how you felt,& *back* away from them, never taking your eyes off theirs. I have found that this is quite effective. Usually when undesirable behavior doesn't get the reaction expected it stops. But if it doesn't speak to someone who's in a position of authority where it's taking place at. If need be let them know it's harassment & file a complaint. If all else fails you may just have to seek out another establishment, job, place to live, whatever the case may be.

You don't know how badly I wanted to comment on this post when I read it, but I was on my phone and about 3 days behind at work. If it's at work, yes tell them their comments are unwelcome and if they continue inform a supervisor. The way you described their comments just are completely smarmy and creepy. I had a similar problem at a restaurant I worked at. The dishwasher didn't speak English, but I managed to communicate with him when he was hitting on me. I would just turn around with a large chef's knife in my hand. That little dude could jump high I tell you! If it's outside of the work place, say a bar, when someone makes an unwelcome comment you could ask them to look at the hairy mole under your arm. OR you could simply tell them "Thanks! Yes the doctor did a great job making my Adam's apple smaller too!" (unless you are actually trans, in which case don't do that one) Anything you can think of to knock them off their game and direct the conversation in an unexpected or disturbing way. Randomness is your friend. "Hey your butt is looking great!" "Hey, my dentist said the puss he sucked out of my molar was the stinkiest he's ever seen". I think you get the idea.

" I would just turn around with a large chef's knife in my hand. That little dude could jump high I tell you!" IC, these are the kinds of lines that convince me you are secretly a size 4 comedienne in Manhattan practicing material for an upcoming gig.

LOLing yet again! I wrote the above before finishing your post and wow, you did it again. Thank you so much. I needed a good laugh. I am behind on work. Today was supposed to be my day to catch up on work and instead I am preoccupied with important insights about patterns in my life. Important knowledge, but I don't want to contemplate these things when there is so much opportunity here and now. Also, I had it out one last time with my roommate. I am moving out. She won't let me out in less than 30 days and I could miss out on my dream home - an awesome loft in a great complex in Downtown Los Angeles - if I have to pay double rent. Grrr. But anyways - thank you all for the suggestions. :)

I have always been heavier, especially as a child. When I became an adult and dropped down to my lowest of 128 my family was the worst. I have 7 brothers so they would constantly picking on me. It went from me being a fatty to me having an eating disorder. My grandmother even wrote me a letter on Christmas one year telling me how horrible I looked. I used to cry about it but then I realized as long as I'm happy with myself I don't care. I laugh at them now when they say things. When it comes to friends saying things about me being skinny I normally come back with a sarcastic remark.

I promise that's a true story. There was also the time he followed me into the pantry when I offered to pepper spray him. He respectfully declined. I'm sorry you're having roommate issues I was going to offer to help you move, but I think I will be in the Midwest that day. Sorry. Did you get caught up on your work? My phone wanted me to ask you if you got waffles because it is apparently hungry. You don't have to answer that question. Wwwwwwwwws

My phone also wanted to say Wwwwwws. Yup.

Gotta love these fill in the blank electronic gadgets. The ones at work who annoy me are the ones who tell me I'm too skinny now and don't need to eat healthy or go to the gym. I'm 132, 60 pounds less than where I started, and still flabby. Per my docs (Ortho and regular) with osteoporosis, strength training and with my lungs, cardio that both are mandatory at least 2-3 days week forever. I have been lax lately, but back at it after my break to recover.

People actually tell you you don't need to eat healthy? Are these the people who eat McDonalds everyday? I didn't know you had osteoporosis I'm sorry I've heard exercise is supposed to be very good for that. What's wrong with your lungs?
