I finally saw the nutritionist and found out all the cute and clever things her grandchildren are doing and how her father died and all about how loving and supportive her family is. She told me everything she knew about how her father responded to chemotherapy for lung cancer (I have multiple myeloma) so I would "know what to expect". My hematologist and oncological assistant had already debriefed me with information specific to the treatment I'm undergoing, so much of what the nutritionist told me was misinformation. In the last five minutes of the appointment, she printed off some sheet pan recipes she found on the internet and told me to watch my sodium and protein. So much for help from that quarter.

But I've settled into a diet that's working for me. I have to balance sodium and protein very carefully because I have deficiencies in both and and getting rid of it at a prodigious rate, yet I have to protect my kidneys from them. I think I have a pretty good balance right now.

I started the cancer treatment yesterday and tolerated it well. I have to keep moving so that the poison circulates properly, so I've started a routine of drinking a glass of water and then walking a quarter mile every hour from sunrise to sunset. When I'm high on steroids, I do as much cooking as I can and then I won't have to do it when I'm exhausted the rest of the week. Also, I'll have meals I can make quickly that have the circumscribed amount of sodium and protein, so I won't go over or under.

I think I can do this.
