We really don't need much of a surplus to build muscle. And for females, at 20-30% body fat, you can gain muscle even around maintenance. Unfortunately, big surpluses tend to get stored mainly as fat.

Oh gosh, I was not even attempting surplus; I'm just insanely hungry right now when I work out (like a teenager level of hunger). I think I need to bump up my protein considerably. There was one day when I managed 100 g of protein, and I was not feeling hungry that day, but most days I'm between 60-80 g. Thank you, Oats_the_whey!

I know what you mean. The hunger is not necessarily a bad thing if it pushes you to eat more protein. I mean, the body does need the energy to rebuild the tissue.

Keep at it. I am going to check %body fat and muscle mass Tuesday. With how I’ve been lately I am not expecting too much.

You'll get there Daddy Manatee. I've lost a bunch of muscle during the heavy dieting I did. I'm trying to get that muscle back, but it is very slow indeed.
