I just want to say a sincere thank you to everyone who took the time to comment on my first post. It meant so much to me to see how the words of encouragement and support. This is the first time I’ve ever publicly talked about my weight and my struggles and I wasn’t sure what to expect on this app. I knew I could count calories, but I didn’t realize there was a whole community out there. It makes me feel like I’m not alone on this journey and that means a lot. I will have to figure out how this newsfeed works so I can follow all of you as well and we can support each other along our journeys!

Today I will face the almighty grocery store! I plan to put in my headphones and listen to music while I shop. My hope is that if I see something tempting I’ll just dance my way right past it lol

Eating healthy is the goal, but I’m not the best cook and not very creative in the kitchen when it comes to meals so I tend to eat the same thing over and over again because it’s easy. I also have a lot of food restrictions I primarily put on myself, non-dairy, non-sugar, vegan. Food has been my enemy my whole life and I’m trying to change the way I think about it, which is hard.

I was a baker, a very good baker, that’s how I got to the size I am now, ugh. Baking was my passion, I loved it so much, but I discovered I was addicted to sugar, and had to give up baking and sugar. I had no self control over it. I couldn’t just eat one cookie or cupcake, I’d eat the whole thing, and it was embarrassing. I’ve never figured out how to control myself around sugar. It really is a dangerous drug. I say drug because it’s more addictive than cocaine. And the worst part about sugar is that it’s literally in everything, and it’s so hard to avoid completely. Pizza, I love pizza, if pizza were a man I’d marry it I love it so much lol But I’m sure there’s sugar in the sauce and maybe even some dough, and I can eat the whole thing, which isn’t good. I’m really trying to figure it out but it’s so hard.

When it comes to dairy, my body is just like nope, nope, nope lol Breaks my damn heart! I love dairy! Sour cream, yogurt, cheese! Can’t have any of it or I get sick. Aside from the occasional pizza, which is worth the pain, I’ve had to give it all up. The good news is that in todays world there’s lots of vegan options now. Planet Oat Extra Creamy is the perfect cream replacement in coffee, so I don’t feel like I’m missing anything there. And there’s some vegan cheeses that aren’t bad, like Chao and Violife, but some of them are the worst lol

And when it comes to meat, I’ve never been a big red meat eater, but I loved chicken. If you are a meat love I don’t recommend watching the documentaries on the meat and dairy industries, boy oh boy it was hard to recover mentally lol I still eat meat but not very often. I’d say I’m mostly vegan at this point. My doctor said vegan diets tend to be high in carbohydrates which can also affect your health so it’s just like what now?! Ugh.

My relationship with food is just not a good one, it’s very toxic. I’m working with a therapist to try to change my negative associations with food but it’s a very slow process.

Anyhow, I’m off to the grocery store, wish me luck! I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing lol

XO
Michelle

If you're leaning vegan, there are many ways to put together a healthful diet. I wouldn't get scared off by the carb comment. I'm not vegetarian, but am mostly so. There are soooo many tasty and healthy vegan foods! I'm sure you put time and creativity into it when you were baking-- maybe you can direct that same type of energy into exploring plant-based recipes 😊 (Says she who loves to experiment in the kitchen)

Good luck! You can do this! If you can maintain a no sugar, no dairy, vegan diet- you must be superwoman! That sounds extremely difficult to me.

If you have not already done so, request a consult with a dietician. Is your dairy issue lactose? If so I am going to assume that you are already aware of lactate tablets and Lactaid milk.Real milk with the lactase removed. Now is all Olson the time for you to do so major research and self education in alternative foods to help you attain the nutrition that it has to have to function optimally and to help keep you healthy. There is a plethora of information out there and GOOGLE IS your friend. Give some consideration to experimenting with SWERVE (erythritol) sugar substitute, or LAKANTO (monk fruit ) products that are both really good options for people with sugar issues (diabetes) SWERVE does not raise blood sugars and people with sugar craving issues report that it doesn’t trigger those cravings. I am a major supporter of both. I use SWERVE when I bake. I typically switch out half the sugar. Can’t tell the difference.. experiment with different products that will allow you to eat as close to normal as possible. Good luck to you. I’m interested in seeing how well you can adapt and grow.

I find going to the grocery store with a well planned grocery list keeps me from buying anything else. try to keep the trips to the store minimum. I try to go just 1-2x a week. 1x if possible. I usually eat the same thing every day also. so its easy to plan a grocery list and meal prep at the same time for the week. rice and some protein every meal is sugar free and dairy free 😂 and that's what I been doing the past 4wks. sugars been below 15g. it takes tons of discipline but it do able

I learned a lot of great dairy and sugar free tips and recipes through whole30. I did see a post on Pinterest with vegan recipes. Canned coconut milk is amazing to make things creamy. TVP is also awesome for getting plant based protein. Highly recommended to help balance out the carbs, but as mentioned before, don’t stress. Everyone has a different eating plan and you just need to figure out what works for you. Sugars my trigger too!

maybe look into getting a vegan cook book for ideas on new meals you can cook😄

Sounds like you've got a plan! Happy New Year!

RN16 - I picked up the cookbook "Veganomicon" and can't wait to try some of these recipes. We usually eat mostly plant based in our house, anyway, and I love to experiment, although I'm not actually vegan or vegetarian. I don't think it takes a radical diet that's a constant struggle to stick to for a positive change. I want any change I make to be one I can sustain. I believe Michael Pollan had it right when he said, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." As I get away from processed foods, watch portions, and focus on the plant kingdom, I feel healthier

Carbs are good food. I think they've gotten a bad reputation because so many of the carbs we eat are simple carbs like refined flour and sugar, but whole grains are good for you - lots of fiber, some protein, and B-vitamins. Doctors are not nutritionists or dietitians. Millions of people live healthy lives as vegetarians and vegans, so if this is what works for you, do it. There are a lot of videos on YouTube of vegan cooking and meal planning. I watch Jess Beautician. Her meals are hugely expensive and she spends a lot of time preparing elaborate meals, but she has a lot of ideas that can be adapted to a simpler lifestyle and she demonstrates preparing lunches for the whole week, reusing ingredients, and those are usually doable. You're going to do this. I'm pulling for you.

Mielesque.I agree.my way of eating has ALWAYS involved portion control and moderation. Healthier food most of the time and less healthy or less conducive to maintaining my weight just once in a while. Deprivation does not work, guilt does not work. Excessive exercise does not work. Real food, real recipes that the whole family can eat. A more Mediterranean way of eating is a good place to start.

Granted, there are good carbs out there. You will find any non-startchy carb goes down well unless you are doing a fat-fast (all fat intake) or BBB&E challenge. My rule of thumb when purchasing is no starch, and if it has more than 5 ingredients, it's not good for you. I would reccommend that you look up each item on line and pull the nutrition info and ingredients prior to shopping. Know you will do well. Believe in YOU!

My wife is a baker too and we totally understand your challenges. Good luck on your journey. The feed on here can be a bit jumbled, but you will see most of the people you follow most of the time 😊
