hi! i’m never to writing in my journals and would love some advice on how to have a heather relationship with food. I have struggled with an eating disorder and went from a size 14 to a size 4(21 years old btw). I want to eat more balanced and enjoy food/life without feeling like I wanna punish myself. I would love some wisdom or even some words of encouragement.

morning! first thing that comes to mind is that you're on the right track - reaching out and talking about your issues with food means you're aware and thinking about it. you'll never make an improvement until you realize it's needed and actually want it. so you've made a good start at it! I honestly don't feel I can advise about having a better relationship with food, but if my method of making sure I stay where I want to be calorie and macro wise is of any use to you, have at it. I take a moment in the morning to preplan what I'll eat for the day and log it into Fatsecret. it's hard to beat this app for logging food and making any adjustments needed! As for support, it's also hard to beat this community. Folks who need to eat more, eat less, eat better, or just start moving - there's someone from every walk of life here, I've found! Whether my suggestion works for you or not, don't lose hope. SOMETHING will work, it's just a matter of finding it - and that's where the diversity of this community comes in so handy. you got this, just stick with it!

I encourage you to check out Stephanie Buttermore and Natacha Océane (YouTube). They talk a lot about disordered eating patterns and overcoming them to develop a normal relationship to nourishing yourself.

I love that you're reaching out! I've struggled with disordered eating as well, for the past 40 years. My plans: 1️⃣ There was some childhood stuff I got counseling for. 2️⃣ Since then, I've been focused on listening to my body - eat when hungry, enjoy my meal, rest-no-gym if I'm sore. 3️⃣ I'm not going to deny myself the joy of cooking, eating and feeding others. Food is a wonderful way to connect with people. 4️⃣ I love the cultures & histories of various cuisine - the what, why, who, when. For example, Vietnamese cuisine has some French influences. Why? Tomato plants were originally exported as ornamentals. What the what? 5️⃣ I have lots of fond memories in the kitchen with my other family. If you're into reading...Have you read the fictional Recipe for Bees? The author weaves a story of relationships, history & life through a family cookbook. ↪So in conclusion (lol sorry this sounds so formal) I wanted to cultivate healthier & broader associations with food, eating & my body. Not sure if that helps 💗

To begin with eliminate the world diet from your vocabulary. That is not what you are striving for. You want a lifestyle change where you can learn to eat healthier most of the time and enjoy less healthy choices once in a while. Portion control and moderation. “Cheat meals”, deprivation and guilt have no business in this plan to develop a more balanced relationship with food. This can be done— you CAN do it. Welcome to FS.

Count you calories and stick to your RDI for life. Otherwise, you won't be able to enjoy everything you enjoy eating. EOS Take care and may God bless us all all ways...Amen

Start with small changes: add more veggies to your next meal. Plan and prepare a healthy lunch to take with you once a week. Take the stairs instead of the lift, walk 10 minutes in your lunch break. It's not too overwhelming and over time you will feel a natural desire to do more. Always remember that you don't have to be perfect! Working on yourself is good enough! We ALL have slip ups, lazy days and unhealthy meals. Forgive yourself and start again straight away. Small steps all the way
